For such a famously easygoing country, Spain has always turned out to be one of the most tumultuous stops on Sean’s journeys. Arriving in Barcelona from Cairo triggered not one but two life crises, years apart, about the constraints of Egypt; arriving in Madrid from New York saw plans fall apart to catastrophic effect. Spain has brought love, and lost it; once found again it still proved elusive. Yet, somehow, it draws him back, most recently for a couple months in Barcelona in 2010 when many of these photographs were taken — just in time, as it happens, for the debt crisis to trigger a wave of protests throughout the country.
