The stunning attacks two days ago in Paris by Islamic State hit a number of places I know all too well, including the restaurant Le Petit Cambodge where I often went to get a pork and nut stew called natin that I would take to eat by the Canal St-Martin nearby.
The shock of the assault has had me looking at this original Charles de Gaulle campaign poster that I found years ago at a threadbare antiques shop in the 20e and have had framed on my wall ever since. I am not much of a fan of De Gaulle, in fact, but the poster’s declaration “With You, For You” seems appropriate right now.
