The iPhone app Hipstamatic seemed cool for a while: all those retro saturated colors tapped into a nostalgia for Polaroids. Then some PR agency did its job too well and it seemed like every media outlet was writing about how cool Hipstamatic was; suddenly, the thrill was gone. But now Balazs Gardi has put Hipstamatic to good use by bringing it to the war in Afghanistan and the results — which can be seen in this Foreign Policy magazine slideshow — are incredibly evocative.
It turns out that Hipstamatic was just underutilized in Williamsburg and is really in its element in Kabul. Who knew?
