Newsreel: ’67 War and party balloons for Red China

The authoritative newsreel voice has become synonymous with jingoism and, indeed, there was much nuance and detail left out of these archival news reports (from archive.org) about the start — 44 years ago today — of the ’67 War in the Middle East, in which, the newsreels avows, “Our State Department says we are neutral in word, thought, and deed.” Then there are the resettlement policies in the demilitarized zone in Vietnam, which hardly proved a great success; and an especially ludicrous program to menace Communist China by attaching leaflets to helium party balloons in the hope that they’d blow the mainland’s way.
